Activity: Engage students in efforts to connect leftover food with people in need.
Engaging students in efforts to connect leftover food with people in need is a wonderful way to promote sustainability and community involvement.
Here are some steps you can take to get students involved in this initiative:
The first step is to raise students’ awareness of food waste and food insecurity. Than share statistics and real-life stories to make them aware of the seriousness of the problem.
Form teams of students responsible for combating food waste and food insecurity. Share tasks between teams and define which team will be responsible for the following activities:
- Find links to collaborate with local organizations such as shelters or non-profit organizations working to mitigate food insecurity, to understand their needs and procedures.
- Set up a food recovery programme: Work with school canteens, restaurants and grocery stores to recover leftover, unsold or excess food that would otherwise go to waste. Make sure food is still safe for consumption. Distribute the collected food to local shelters, or organizations that serve those in need. Ensure safe and hygienic handling of food. Keep records of the food recovered, distributed, and the number of people served. Share this data with students to showcase the impact of their efforts.
- Organize food collection campaigns: Organize regular food collection campaigns within the school community to collect non-perishable food items. Encourage students to donate items as part of a school-wide initiative.
- Promote Responsible Consumption: Educate students about responsible food consumption. Encourage them to avoid over-purchasing or over-ordering food to reduce waste. Use social media, posters, and presentations to share information and raise support for the cause. Organize workshops or seminars for students about sustainable food practices, composting, and the environmental impact of food waste.
- Community awareness raising action: Involve students in community engagement efforts. They can volunteer at local canteens, participate in food distribution events or help prepare and serve meals.
The results and impact of the above activities should be promoted by the student team through the use of digital or printed materials created in an accessible format (videos, articles in the school newsletter, posters, flyers, etc.).
