Wardrobe Exercise

Learning Outcomes

After completing this activity trainees/ learners will have a better understanding of how other might perceive them and how they want to be perceived. Thus a better understanding of yourself.

 

Description

Students will need to have a sheet of paper and fold this into a “wardrobe.”

Each side of the paper represents a self-reflective question:

  • The front left side: What do people think of you if they see you in the street, without talking to you?
  • Inside on the left ‘door’ side: What would you tell someone if they ask you who you are? (list five things)
  • Inside on the left: What do you hope people feel about you when they get to know you?
  • Inside on the right: What are values that define you as a person?
  • Inside on the right ‘door’ side: What colour do you think fits you best as a person?
  • The front right side: What colour do people think fits you best if they see in the street, without talking to you?

The questions of the front door represent what you think might be the first impression you give, whereas the inside is rather about your personality.

The teacher/educator can also choose to let other classmates answer the questions on the front and make the student compare their own answers with what others said about them. Is it the same? Is it different? How come?

Questions for Reflections

  • Do you think your outside reflects your inside?
  • Is there a reason why it does or it doesn’t reflect your inside?
  • What was your thinking process in answering these questions about yourself?
  • Did you find it difficult to answer these questions about yourself? Why not or Why?
  • When you compared your front “doors” with what others said about you, how did you feel?
  • Did you understand why others wrote something different on your front “doors”?
