Waste Audit and Reduction Campaign

Duration

120 minutes

Learning Outcomes

After completing this activity trainees/ learners will learn skills related to waste awareness, data collection and analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking, marketing and promotion, public speaking and internal communication.

These skills may be applied within classrooms, households, and corporate settings to foster a comprehensive understanding and proactive approach to waste management.

Description

Engage trainees/learners in conducting a waste audit in their respective environments (classroom/school/business setting). The activity will be divided into the following phases:

  1. Preparation: In a classroom setting, discuss the types of waste generated in a classroom or school environment. In a corporate setting, discuss the types of waste generated in a business environment.
  2. Data Collection: Collect and categorise waste over a specified period (e.g., one week). Record the types and quantities of waste collected.
  3. Data Analysis: Analyse the data to identify patterns and areas for improvement. Here, you may use statistical tools to present findings.
  4. Solution Design: Brainstorm and design a waste reduction campaign. Propose solutions such as promoting recycling, composting, or reducing single-use plastics. Develop marketing strategies to promote the campaign.
  5. Implementation: Execute the campaign in the classroom/school/business setting and monitor the progress to gather feedback.
  6. Presentation: Prepare and deliver a presentation on the findings, proposed solutions, and outcomes. In a classroom setting, this will be presented to classmates and school staff, and at work, this to colleagues and management.

Questions for Reflection

  • How can we encourage fellow students/colleagues to actively participate in the waste audits and monitor waste (food, energy, non-reusable materials, etc.)?
  • What strategies can we employ to make our campaign as engaging and impactful as possible?
  • How can we extend the lessons learned to our households and share this knowledge with the larger community?
  • What obstacles did we encounter during the project, and how did we overcome them?
